Essential Warm Weather Safety Tips For Summer
As the temperatures rise, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and well-being, especially for our senior community. Warm weather brings joy and opportunities for outdoor activities, but it also comes with risks that can be particularly challenging for older adults. At The Neighbors of Dunn County, we are committed to ensuring our residents enjoy the summer months safely. Here are some essential warm weather safety tips for seniors.
Use Sunscreen When Outside
One of the most important steps to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is to use sunscreen. Even if you are not in direct sunlight, it’s vital to apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Sun damage can occur even on cloudy days or when you are in the shade. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen generously on all exposed skin, and reapply every two hours, or more often if you are sweating or swimming.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in warm weather. Drinking fluids helps prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration, so it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, and increase this amount if you are spending time outside or engaging in physical activities. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can contribute to dehydration.
Find Shade And Wear Protective Clothing
When spending time outside, always look for shaded areas to stay cool. Wearing protective clothing, such as long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses, can help protect your skin from the sun. Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics can also keep you cool and comfortable. At The Neighbors of Dunn County, our outdoor visiting spaces, including screened-in porches and courtyards, provide shaded areas for residents to enjoy the outdoors safely.
Severe Weather Precautions
Warm weather often brings severe weather conditions, such as thunderstorms and high winds. It’s essential to be prepared and know the protocol for severe weather watches and warnings.
Severe Weather Watches: During a weather watch, our staff will go through the households, community rooms, chapels, beauty shops, etc., and close draperies or pull down shades. They will also prepare for moving residents out of their rooms should a warning be imminent. While residents have the right to refuse to leave their rooms, we strongly encourage them to follow The Neighbors of Dunn County protocol for their safety.
Severe Weather Warnings: In the event of a weather warning, it is up to the family and resident’s discretion to decide about leaving the building. However, we strongly encourage residents to stay in the building and avoid outings during an active weather warning. If a weather warning occurs, our staff will ask residents to sit in the corners of the hallways in each household. These points are the most sturdy areas of the building in case severe weather hits.
Warm Weather Safety During Outings
Our weather policy states that we are unable to go on outings when the real feel temperature is over 90°F. Our Life Enhancement team closely monitors the weather on outing days and updates residents as soon as possible with any changes. Families and friends should also be aware of the temperature when planning outdoor activities with their loved ones. Ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for our residents is our top priority.
Recognizing And Responding To Heat-Related Illnesses
Heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly and become dangerous if not addressed promptly. According to the National Institute on Aging, it is important to take immediate action if you feel like you may have a heat-related illness. Follow these tips to prevent heat-related illnesses from becoming a dangerous heat stroke:
- Get out of the sun and into a cool, ideally air-conditioned place.
- Drink fluids but avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Shower, bathe, or sponge off with cool water.
Recognizing the symptoms of heat-related illnesses early and taking appropriate action can prevent serious health issues.
